Car pooling There are carpool times for folks without vehicles, or to share rides. If you have space to share a ride show up at a carpool site to help drive. If you are waiting at a site and no one shows, continue to the next carpool site or hiking location. The fewer cars we bring the better. Some trailheads have limited parking, and some drives require higher clearance vehicles. Carpooling Locations: Port Orford Battle Rock Park Hwy 101 South end of Town: Gold Beach Curry General Hospital 94220 Fourth Street by the Emergency bays; Brookings Coastal Cardiology 412 Alder St. behind Dairy Queen. What to Bring It is always a good idea to wear good sturdy footwear on our hikes no matter how easy. Most hikes are rain or shine, so if you’re up for going-bring the gear you will need to stay warm and happy! Raingear, a hat & warm layers should be considered. A small backpack for your layers and a lunch or snack is also advisable. Always bring drinking water. Cameras, binoculars and identification books are also popular. |

> September 17 Red Fish Rocks Marine Research Reserve beach walk from Rocky Point to Coal Point - Explore our coastline as you travel the beach and rocky shore for a two and half mile round trip hike from Rocky Point to Coal Point and back ( beach access parking & trail head are about 3 miles south of Port Orford). The Redfish Rocks Community Team will hike along to discuss some already established and ongoing research, provide up to date details and answer your questions about the soon to be imposed Redfish Rocks Marine Reserve and Marine Protected Area. Redfish Rock MR & MPA is one of the two first designated marine reserves for the State of Oregon.
Carpooling: Port Orford Battle Rock Park at 10:00 am; Gold Beach Hospital at 9:15, Brookings Coastal Cardiology Center at 8:30 > October 8 Port Orford Dark Sky Walk Why is Port Orford considered a Dark Sky Town? In order to preserve the night sky, Port Orford has an ordinance to keep lighting to a minimum, and to prevent sky glow, a type of light pollution. Because of this consideration our night sky is filled with stars including the Milky Way. Come walk around town to learn about the lighting, and identify some constellations. A special permission walk up on the Port Orford Heads will lead us out to the overlook where you will be awed by the night sky. Carpooling: Port Orford Battle Rock Park at 7:30pm; Gold Beach Hospital at 6:45pm, Brookings Coastal Cardiology Center at 6:00pm > October 22 Cape Sebastian This Cape just South of Gold Beach has stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. Geologist Maggie McHugh will demystify the Cretaceous-aged Cape Sebastian sandstone and holoclasty - a form of physical weathering in rocks. First we will shuttle some cars to Meyers Creek for a one way downhill hike from the Cape to the Beach. The trail heads out to a high view point and then descends down the South side of the Cape to some grassy benches just above the pounding surf where we will eat lunch. After lunch we drop down onto the beach and walk the beach to Meyers Creek. 2.9 miles to Meyers Creek. Carpooling: Port Orford Battle Rock Park at 9:15; Gold Beach Hospital at 10:00, Brookings Coastal Cardiology Center at 9:15 > November 12 Oregon Redwood Trail - A redwood gem right here in Oregon, up the Winchuck River, South of Brookings. This easy 1.25 mile loop takes us on a stroll through these coastal giants. A quiet, tranquil place, this pocket of redwoods was saved from logging in earlier years. Carpooling: Port Orford Battle Rock Park at 8:30; Gold Beach Hospital at 9:15, Brookings Coastal Cardiology Center at 10:00 > December 10 Sixth Annual Elk River Salmon Walk Join Ken Fliszar from the Elk River Fish Hatchery as he leads Sole Pursuits from the Hatchery up the Elk River Road watching for spawning salmon. We will share the story about the salmon’s remarkable journey, look for salmon redds (nests), and try to spot a fish or two, while learning about our healthy Elk River watershed. A Hatchery tour is available after the walk. Carpooling: Port Orford Battle Rock Park at 10:00; Gold Beach Hospital at 9:15, Brookings Coastal Cardiology Center at 8:30 HIKE RATINGS for those somewhat in-shape:
